There are three major languages spoken commonly throughout North America. These are: English, Spanish and French. Of course, North America is a great land of opportunity, so you can encounter any number of different languages depending upon where you go throughout the continent. But English is the official national language of the United States and Canada has two official languages: French and English. In Latin America, Spanish is the common language.
In the United States, English is easily the most common language and Spanish is probably the second most common. Still, America is just one of a handful of countries that does not have an official language. In this country, which is visited and settled by people from all over the world, it might be even more fitting that the US has not settled upon an official national language.
Official Languages In the World
Roughly 180 countries around the world have an official language; some of these countries, actually, have more than one official language. Only about 60 countries have no official language, and that includes the United States of America. While that might sound odd, consider how small the countries of Europe and South America are in comparison to the states of the American union. Each of these small countries, on those large continents, often has its own national language. But in the United States, every person who lives in any of the diverse 50 states all speak the same language (give or take a dialect, of course).
Is Having An Official Language Important?
Briefly, no, it is not that important for a country to have an official language. However, an official language can be important to a country with major political activity. Essentially, if a country holds regular, broad government proceedings, it is more important that everyone speaks the same language. Whether parliamentary or jurisdictional, these government meetings require that everyone is able to communicate not just effectively, but efficiently as well.
Is It Important to Learn A Second Language?
While you can now use technology like Language laboratory from Robotel to help you communicate with people all over the world, there has probably never been a better time in history to learn a second language. Not only does this technology make it easier to learn a new language, but technology makes people from other cultures more easily accessible.
